Communities/Subgroups

Biological Flourescence The Biological Fluorescence Subgroup is pleased to announce the two winners of the 2018 Gregorio Weber Award for Excel- lence in Fluorescence Theory and Applications , sponsored by ISS: Debora Foguel , Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Pressure and Fluorescence Studies on Protein Misfolding related to Amyloidogenic and Neurodegenerative Diseases Jerson L. Silva , Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Pressure and Fluorescence Studies on Protein Misfolding related to Prion Diseases and Cancer Each winner will give a short presentation during the Biologi- cal Fluorescence Subgroup Symposium on Saturday, February 17, 2018. The Gregorio Weber Award for Excellence in Fluorescence Theory and Applications is an annual award that honors and recognizes distinguished individuals who have made original and significant contributions to the field of fluorescence. The award is named after Professor Gregorio Weber , who pioneered developments in the theory and the application of fluores- cence techniques in biology and biochemistry. Award recipi- ents are selected from a group nominated by their peers, and all nominees must be senior researchers with a rank of full professor, lab director, or equivalent. For more information please see: http:/www.iss.com/events/ weber.html . Exocytosis & Endocytosis We are excited about our upcoming Exocytosis &Endocy- tosis Subgroup meeting, which will take place 1:00-6:00 pm on Saturday, February 17, 2018. The program was included with the full list of subgroup symposia in the November 2017 newsletter. The program schedule can be viewed at: https:/ goo.gl/3kRqwx Our subgroup dinner is scheduled at 7:00 pm at a nearby Chinese Restaurant (Z & Y). As of the time of this writing, there were still 10 seats available for dinner. Please contact a member of the organizing committee if you are interested in joining us for this fine event.

We are also excited that one of the Society’s symposia for the 2018 meeting is on synaptic vesicle fusion and retrieval. This is thanks to the efforts of Ruth Heidelberger and Ling-gang Wu .

We look forward to seeing you next month. The 2018 Exo/Endo Organizing Committee,

Dixon J. Woodbury Brigham Young University – Chair Brian M. Salzberg University of Pennsylvania – Past Chair Amy Lee University Iowa – Chair-Elect Ilana Lotan Tel Aviv University Les Satin University of Michigan Molecular Biophysics We are very excited about the upcoming Molecular Biophysics subgroup symposium on Saturday, February 17, 2018, at the Moscone Center, San Francisco, 10.30 am –3:00 pm . We have managed to secure a very exciting lineup of speakers from all over the world for this year’s symposium, entitled: Next Generation Measurement and Its Application to Studying Biomolecular Interactions, Properties, and Function . What is unique is how they approach studies of molecular biophysics with new techniques focused on measuring properties as var- ied as charge, size, mass, and force ranging from single mol- ecules all the way to bacteria. The speakers, who represent the full breadth of biophysics and the new techniques and methodologies they will present, will help set the foundations of the next groundbreaking discoveries in our exciting field. I would like to encourage all members of the Biophysical So- ciety to attend and help ensure that the subgroup remains a part of the Biophysical Society meetings in the future. All you have to do is visit our website at https:/www.biophysics.org/ membership/subgroups/molecularbiophysics and follow the instructions. It makes a huge difference! We are very much looking forward to seeing you in San Francisco. — Philipp Kukura , 2018 Subgroup Chair

On behalf of the Biophysical Society, we are delighted to announce a new subgroup: Cell Biophysics! The Subgroup’s inaugural meeting will take place on Saturday, February 17, 2018, in the Moscone Center in San Francisco, California, 10:00 am –12:00 noon . Program details are available online at: http:/www.biophysics.org/2018meeting/Program/ SubgroupSaturday/CellBiophysics/tabid/7468/Default.aspx
