Biophysical Society Bulletin | January 2018
Outreach
BE A JUDGE BPS has sponsored student awards at regional and state science fairs since 2009. So far for 2018, we plan to sponsor awards at more than 30 fairs in 15 states across the United States. These fairs will need judges! This is an excellent opportunity to make students aware of the field of biophysics and for them to meet and interact with practicing scientists. To volunteer as a judge and have an award given at a regional or state fair near you, fill out this survey: https:/ www.surveymonkey.com/r/ScienceFairVolunteers-18. This opportunity is open to both US and non-US mem- bers. For more information about BPS’s science fair outreach, see the website: http:/www.biophysics.org/AboutUs/ GetInvolved/ScienceFairs/tabid/2284/Default.aspx. If you have any questions, contact Caitlin Simpson at SciFairs@biophysics.org. These are just a few of the events BPS members and other biophysicists have planned for Biophysics Week 2018. There is still time for you to add your event to this list. Plan some- thing big or something small. Here are some ideas: • Host a guest lecturer; • Set up a an awareness table at your local school highlighting your major and/or department; • Plan a local meet-up of biophysicists; • Schedule a lunch seminar showcasing student research in biophysics; or Last Call for Biophysics Week Affiliate Events Attend a Biophyzza Pizza Party in Madrid, Spain. Tour a biophysical research lab at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. Learn about biomolecular simulation in Kathmandu, Nepal. Attend a lecture at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Basic Sciences in Zanjan, Iran. Explore biophysics through a series of events at the government Institute of Science in Aurangabad, India.
• Conduct a lab tour or a tour to show off your school’s major facilities. Register your event with the Biophysical Society by January 15 and receive a free Biophysics Week t-shirt. You can register your event at https:/www.surveymonkey. com/r/2018BWAffiliateEvents. The February Bulletin will include a full schedule of Biophysi- cal Society-sponsored events as well as resources.
