Zane Thornburg The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Chemistry Department What has been the most exciting experience of your studies in biophysics?

After training as a physicist and chemist at a liberal arts college (The College of Wooster), my desire going into graduate school was to work on something both fundamental to science and practical to life. My current re- search, simulating reaction-diffusion dynamics in a minimal cell, is my most exciting experience I have had in biophysics. I feel as though I am working with the simplest system in cell biology and contributing to understand- ing the basic rules and dynamics of cellular life. Using theory and computation, I successfully reproduce protein counts and mRNA half-lives. In the most novel aspect of my work, coupling metabolism with genetic information processes, allowed me to quantitatively predict all cellular ATP costs. Every step I make is exhilarating, and I am deeply excited to work in a field where there are so many open questions that are impactful to our understanding of cellular life.
