In Memoriam
Lubert Stryer Lubert Stryer (1938–2024), a renowned biophysicist and bio chemist on the faculty of Stanford University School of Medicine, passed away this April at the age of 86. Stryer, a member of the Biophysical Society for 45 years, was known for his groundbreak ing work on vision and on quan titative biophysics. He was also well-known as author of Biochem
Harvard Medical School and completed postdoctoral training at Cambridge. His early efforts at Stanford were directed at verifying the (1/r) 6 dependence of Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) on distance, and he popularized the concept of FRET as a “spectroscopic ruler.” Stryer later made seminal contributions to our understanding of the biochemistry of vision, particularly the molecular basis of visual transduction. His research elucidated the role of cyclic GMP in the visual cascade and the structure and function of rhodopsin. Stryer was a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the Amer ican Philosophical Society. His awards include the Eli Lilly Award in Biological Chemistry, the Distinguished Inventor Award from the Intellectual Property Owners Association, the Stein and Moore Award from the Protein Society, and the President’s National Medal of Science.
