BiophysicsWeek
BPS Subgroup Membrane Structure & Function The Membrane Structure & Function Subgroup hosted three virtual events to celebrate Biophysics Week. The first event was “Why Noise Is Interesting – A Voyage from Maths, Physics, and Chemistry to Biology” given by Thorsten Wohland and colleagues from the National University of Singapore. During this seminar, they discussed the issue of “noise” and how it can contain information and how we use it to obtain information on processes in cell membranes. Experi- ments were shown with a TIRF system showing how we can follow lipid bilayer and cell membrane dynamics in time using Imaging FCS. The second event was “Why We Are Fascinated by Biophys- ics,” presented by Ingela Parmryd and colleagues from the Uni- versity of Gothenburg, Sweden. This session included inter- views and discussions with biophysicists from undergraduate student to professor emeritus career stages. The third event was a tour of a lab where research in receptor signaling is conducted. The tour was led by Kalina Hristova and colleagues from John Hopkins University. BPS Sponsored Events Public Affairs Committee Brings NIH and NSF Grant Experts to Biophysics Week For this year’s Biophysics Week programming, the Public Affairs Committee hosted two panels of experts from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) to discuss grant funding for biophysics.
NIH panelists included the expertise of Dorothy Becket and Fei Wang of the National Institutes of General Medical Sciences and Sudha Veeraraghavan of the Center for Scientific Review. If you missed the livestream, a replay can be viewed at https:/ www.biophysics.org/webinars/expert-insight-into-crafting- nih-grants. NSF brought in experts Engin Serpersu , Marcia Newcomer , and Jaroslaw Majewski of the Division of Molecular & Cellular Bio- sciences. Followers tweeted with #BiophysicsAMA to ask Popescu about her experience as a biophysicist, her research, and her insight on techniques in biophysics. Readers can catch up on the conversation by visiting the Biophysical Society’s Twitter account: @BiophysicalSoc. Gabriela Popescu
