Career Development

What Resources Does BPS Provide for Career Development? Dear Molly Cule,

Cell Stretching Systems

interviews in industry and academia, making the most out of postdoctoral training, and much more. For more details on all of these programs, look at the Annual Meeting website under the Program  Career Development Center category. One- on-one career counseling sessions require sign-up onsite, so be sure to head to the Career Development Center on the Saturday that starts the Annual Meeting! Outside of the Career Development Center, many other pro- fessional development sessions are planned for the Annual Meeting. Each year there are networking sessions geared toward different career levels and panel discussions on a variety of topics, from grant writing to establishing a lab to careers outside of academia. Preview the 2019 sessions on the Annual Meeting website under Program  Professional Development & Networking. In addition to the activities provided at the Annual Meeting, the Society provides a year-round job board on its website, where members can post job ads and resumes. Also on the website are useful articles on career development, as well as webinars on a variety of career development topics, all housed under the Education & Careers tab on the main So- ciety website. The Society also sponsors networking events organized by members and held in locations not served by the Annual Meeting. The schedule for those events is under the Meetings and Events tab on the site. — Molly Cule Volunteer to judge at your local science fair! Help the next generation learn about biophysics! Choose a student to win an award sponsored by BPS for the best biophysics-related project! BPS will provide funding for science fair awards where a BPS member wishes to judge. Annual Art of Science Contest Opens Entries are due December 3, 2018 Do you have an eye-catching image that resulted from your research? To showcase the artistic side of scientific imaging, BPS members attending the 2019 Annual Meeting may enter the annual BPS Image Contest, The Art of Science. Monetary prizes will be awarded for first, second, and third place. Submit today at biophysics.org/2019meeting

the amazing science there. I have heard that the Society also provides career development resources, but I’m not sure what is available. How can I find out what resources the Society pro- vides? Sincerely, Reaching for Resources

Connect with BPS

Dear Reaching for Resources, Thanks for the great question! Indeed, a major priority of the Society is the advancement of biophysics as a field, including helping with career development of its members. In addition to attending scientific sessions, you can also find career de- velopment sessions in the Career Development Center at the Society’s Annual Meeting. Among the many offerings there are a job board and resume bank, allowing job seekers and employers to connect, one-on-one individual career advis- ing sessions where you can meet with a professional career counselor, and a wide range of professional development workshops and networking events. Workshop topics vary year to year, and offer training on skills ranging from job talks,

Grants & Opportunities

HIV Drug Resistance: Genotype-Phenotype-Outcome Correlations (R01 Clinical Trial Not Allowed) This grant will support studies that will evaluate HIV drug resistance and its relationship to treatment success. Applications are sought proposing studies of genotype/phenotype correlations in diverse subtypes, the relationship between drug resistance mutations present in minority variant viral populations and treat- ment outcomes Deadline: December 5, 2018 Website: https:/grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/ RFA-AI-18-029.html

BRAIN Initiative: Biology and Biophysics of Neural Stimulation (R01 Clinical Trial Optional) A central goal of the BRAIN Initiative is to develop new and improved perturbation technologies suitable for con- trolling specified cell types and circuits to modulate func- tion in the central nervous system. This funding opportu- nity announcement seeks applications to systematically characterize, model, and validate the membrane, cellular, circuit, and adaptive-biological responses of neuronal and non-neuronal cells to various types of stimulation. As part of this program, investigators will be required to participate in a consortium to develop standards and models systems for the evaluation of current and next generation neuromodulation technologies.
