also led to several computational investigations of translation- al and configurational entropy in a variety of small-molecule solutes and the role of backbone and side-chain conformational entropy during protein folding and binding. Application of these multifaceted approaches involved strategic utilization of molec- ular modeling, MD force field parameterization, computational free energy calculations, and density functional theory. Amore recent example of Mario’s interest in integrating structural and thermodynamics studies is found in his work on voltage-gated sodium channels. His group determined how calmodulin and Ca 2+ control conformational ensembles of specific targets in normal and disease states and thus influence organismal health. These
diverse research topics illustrate howMario continually pushed the boundaries of computational biophysics to connect molecular behavior to biology. Mario’s enduring imprint on the Biophysical Society, the Socie- dad de Biofisicos Latinoamericanos (SOBLA), of which he was a co-founder, and the many scientists his life influenced is that of a gentle visionary who will be greatly missed. — Andres Hernandez de la Peña , Ignacia Echeverria , Jesse Yoder , Mario Bianchet , Mayukh Chakrabarti , Saif S.
