Fall 2018 Call for Networking Events

• The event must take place in an area not currently well served by other opportunities for networking among biophysicists; • A meeting size of approximately 25 to a maximum of 150 attendees is best; • It must be advertised prominently as a BPS-sponsored event; and • If there is a speaker list, it should include graduate stu- dents and postdocs. BPS will be accepting networking event proposals for events occurring January–June 2019. The networking event sub- mission site will be open September 17–October 31, 2018. Awarded applicants will be notified by late December . If selected, you will receive up to $500 through the Mem- bership Committee’s mini-grant program to host the event. For more information about the proposal requirements or for more information on upcoming networking events, please visit the https:/www.biophysics.org/networking-events. UPCOMING NETWORKING EVENT Lisbon Biophysics Networking Meeting: “From Protein Dynamics to Membrane Biophysics.” October 12, 2018, Lisbon, Portugal, Europe Please visit the event’s page, accessible by links here https:/www.bio- physics.org/upcoming-networking-events for more information.

All career paths have their ups and downs. Learning how to manage the roller coaster in a healthy way becomes an important part of your scientific training and career direction as it evolves. It is important to remember two things: 1) the uncertainties, challenges, choices,

of mindfulness coverage on news sites or social media, etc.). Additional research and communication will only help destig- matize common mental disorders, such as depression and anxiety, treating them as diseases rather than a cognitive choice or character trait. Please take a moment to explore your local resources. Some of the following topics may be a good place to start. Many are discussed on the National Institute of Mental Health website (https:/www.nimh.nih.gov/health/index.shtml). • Directions, links, and resources for managing immediate and less-immediate responses to health and wellness. • Summaries and guides to health services offered by your community, university, or employer. • Training and support resources to recognize when you or someone else may be struggling. • Advice and procedures for communicating concerns to your supervisors, students, or peers. • Holistic resources and multi-faceted approaches to mange behavioral health. This can include clinical or therapeutic resources; local and/or web-based support groups; sport, gaming, coding, or chess clubs; guid- ed-meditation meetings or phone apps (https:/www. mindful.org/); etc. — Bert Tanner , Washington State University

Research Answers to National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) Provocative Questions (R01 Clinical Trial Optional). The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement is to support research projects designed to solve specific problems and paradoxes in cancer research identified by the NCI Provocative Questions initiative. These problems and paradoxes phrased as questions are not intended to represent the full range of NCI’s priorities in cancer research. Rather, they are meant to chal- lenge cancer researchers to think about and elucidate specific problems in key areas of cancer research that are deemed important but have not received sufficient attention. The list of questions can be viewed at https:/ grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-CA-18-019. html Deadline: October 30, 2018 Are you looking to connect with biophysicists in your local area? Do you have an idea for a networking event and want to host one close to home? BPS can help! Since 2011, BPS has encouraged local communities of biophysicists to come together by providing mini-grants to support networking opportunities. These events have brought together scientists (Society members and non-members) to discuss various top- ics in biophysics and to share their experiences, research, and ideas with their local community. All current Society members inside and outside of the United States are eligible to apply. Please note that your event must meet the following requirements: • The event should be no longer than one day; • It should be a stand-alone event (not part of a larger conference); • The event should promote interaction between different institutions and/or communities in a geographical area not served by the BPS Annual Meeting; • There should be an emphasis on promotion of biophysics; Grants & Opportunities

successes, and responsibilities that you are experiencing happen to everyone to some degree, you are not alone in

your experience; 2) stressors (acute or chronic) affect each person differ- ently. Regardless of your title, training level, or career path, there are helpful resources provided by your communi- ty and place of study or employment available to you to manage acute and chronic triggers of mental and physical suffering. If you cannot find suitable local resources, try this link: https:/www.nimh.nih.gov/health/ find-help/index.shtml I encourage you to take the 3 minutes and 20 seconds it requires to do a web-search to identify local resources to manage and improve your mental wellness. I review these resources each semester as I update my syllabi, and this sim- ple exercise always benefits my well-being (both at work and at home). It also helps me reflect on the opportunities I have to support mental and physical health among my research team, students I interact with each day, as well as my family, friends, and colleagues. You, like I, may have noticed that society seems to be putting more emphasis on the fact that mental and physical illnesses are linked to genetic and neuro- logical status of each person (recall the increasing frequency

NCI Outstanding Investigator Award (R35 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)

The objective of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Outstanding Investigator Award (OIA) is to provide long-term support to accomplished investigators with outstanding records of cancer research productivity who propose to conduct exceptional research. It is intended to allow investigators the opportunity to take greater risks, be more adventurous in their lines of inquiry, or take the time to develop new techniques.
