Subgroups Biopolymers in Vivo

Physical Cell Biology The Physical Cell Biology Subgroup (formerly Cell Biophysics) was established in 2018 to create a community for scientists and engineers interested in the complexity of the cell. Our Subgroup meeting will be held during the Biophysical Society (BPS) Annual Meeting in San Francisco on Saturday, February 19, 2022. The 2022 symposium is organized around the theme “RNA as Target and Drug: Cell Biology of Next Generation Thera- peutics.” Invited speakers include Fangyuan Ding (University of California, Irvine), Michelle Hastings (Rosalind Franklin Uni- versity of Science and Medicine), James McNally (Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin), Musa Mhlanga (Radboud University), and Eric Wang (University of Florida). Additional talks will be selected from contributed abstracts. We especially welcome contribu- tions from early stage investigators. We look forward to bringing together researchers working at the cellular level to exchange ideas, form new collaborations, and make new friends. Every BPS member is welcome to attend the symposium. Please show your support by register- ing as a member of the Physical Cell Biology Subgroup. Your membership fees allow us to provide refreshments during the meeting, support speaker travel, and award prizes for best posters. Please visit the Subgroup website at BPS to learn more: https:/www.biophysics.org/subgroups/physi- cal-cell-biology-1. We look forward to seeing you in San Francisco! — Christine Payne , Chair — Ulrike Endesfelder , Chair-Elect — Stefanie Redemann , Secretary-Treasurer — Dan Larson , Program Chair

The Biopolymers in Vivo (BIV) Subgroup has a history of uniquely bringing together the protein and nucleic acid com- munities, with an emphasis on experimental and theoretical biophysical approaches that can reveal what is happening inside cells. On February 19, 2022, the overarching theme of the BIV Symposium at the Biophysical Society Annual Meeting in San Francisco will be “High-Throughput and High-Resolution Approaches to Studying Biopolymers in Vivo,” with topics ranging from massively parallel assays to machine learning. The BIV Symposium will feature Ibrahim Cissé as keynote speaker, followed by an exciting international line-up: Moham- med AlQuirashi , Polly Fordyce , Ylva Ivarsson , Jane Kondév , Ilaria Piazza , and Rommie Amaro . The symposium will end with a talk by the recipient of the BIV Young Faculty Award, who is still to be selected. Attendees are invited to join the speakers, and BIV community, for dinner at the Thirsty Bear Brewing Company in the evening. Be sure to purchase dinner tickets when you register for the Biophysical Society meeting. We are grateful to all the active members of the Subgroup and looking forward to welcoming new members in 2022! BIV Young Faculty Award The BIV Young Faculty Award recognizes early faculty mem- bers whose research and recent achievements focus on cutting-edge investigations and discoveries of biomolecular processes in living organisms. Recipients receive a monetary award as well as the opportunity to give a talk at the BIV Symposium. The application deadline is December 1, 2021. If you are eligible, be sure to apply, and if not, please encourage your colleagues to do so. — Ed O’Brien , Chair — Alex Holehouse , Program Co-Chair — Benedetta Bolognesi , Program Co-Chair Looking to get more involved with the Society? Consider joining your Subgroup’s leadership! Be on the lookout this month for information on officer nominations.

The Biophysical Society (BPS) Student Chapter of the University of Maryland, Baltimore is pleased to announce an upcoming virtual Biophysics Career Panel, scheduled for Friday, October 22, from 2:00 PM–4:00 PM EDT. The event will be focused on discussions with researchers in different biophysical career paths, providing valuable insights on pursuing a career in biophysics. We are expect- ing five speakers/panelists from different professional sectors of biophysics—academia, industry, and government. Members of the audience will have a chance to directly interact with the speakers. For more information about the event please visit https:/umbbiophysics.org/.
