For the 2018 symposium, we have prepared an exciting, multidisciplinary program entitled: Dissecting the Thermodynamics of Channels and Transporters through the Unholy Matrimony of Experiment and Computation. The symposium will showcase research work fo- cused on understanding the structure and mecha- nisms of channels and transporters from a thermo- dynamic perspective. Topics will include substrate specificity and stoichiometry, folding and as- sembly, gating and conformational cycling, and population equilibria and free-energy landscapes. The symposium will also highlight advances made through the combination of experiment, theory and/or simulation, while noting current and fu- ture challenges. Speakers are listed on page 14. We look forward to seeing you in San Francisco! — José D. Faraldo-Gómez , 2018 Subgroup Chair JUDGE Interested in helping the next generation learn about biophysics? Volunteer to judge at your local science fair and choose a student to win an award for the best biophysics-related proj- ect. BPS will provide funding for a student award for every regional or state fair where a BPS member wishes to judge and choose a winner. Award amounts are typically $100. Visit https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ ScienceFairs-18 and fill out the form at least three weeks prior to the event to have BPS sponsor an award at your local fair. Membrane Biophysics The 46th Annual Membrane Biophysics Sub- group Symposium will be held from 1:00 pm to 5:30 pm on February 17, 2018, in the Moscone Center in San Francisco. The symposium will be followed by the Kenneth S. Cole Award ceremony and dinner, starting at 6:00 pm, at the Thirsty- Bear Organic Brewery, located at 661 Howard St. As in previous years, every member of the Bio- physical Society is very welcome to attend these exciting events, but if you decide to join us, please show your support by registering as a member of the subgroup! The membership fees are crucial to ensure the continuity of our symposia, as they help us to cover the costs of the venue, the audio- visual equipment, our coffee breaks, etc. Did you know these costs add up to thousands of dollars? Your support is indispensable. And if you are planning to attend the Cole Award ceremony, as a member you will get a 20 percent discount on the dinner fee. You can renew or start your membership when you register for the Biophysical Society meeting, or at any other time. Simply visit our website, at the link below, and follow the instructions. http://www.biophysics.org/Membership/Sub- groups/MembraneBiophysics
